Uniting the Keystone State

Officially launched at a kick-off
event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on September 5, 1996, the Pennsylvania Restraint
Reduction Initiative (PARRI) has been serving the state ever since, receiving a grant to continue each year. PARRI has been praised for providing leadership,
direction, and technical support to over seven hundred long term care
providers throughout the Commonwealth. The state has seen a 90%
drop in physical restraint use since the project’s inception (from 28% to 2.9%).
We received notice in August of 2009 that the PARRI team has been given a grant for year 14 and will continue its work through June 30 of 2010. Kendal's four-member
training team has provided assistance to 93% of Pennsylvania’s
728 long term care facilities. And 91% of long term care
staff representing over 31,000 individuals have participated in services
provided through the PARRI grant. This assistance has included consultation
and on-site visits addressing the following areas: physical restraint
reduction, fall prevention, psychoactive medication reduction,
behavior management, and individualized assessment. In addition to these areas of expertise, the team will focus on three compelling goals this year: to ramp up our education on the
prevention of pressure ulcers statewide, to launch a new pain
management program with the goal of establishing several training sites,
and to extend our CAPStone – Dignity in Dementia Training program. Meet the team.
